an informed choice. No aspect of your decision is more critical than selecting
the proper surgeon. Qualified cosmetic surgeons will welcome your questions
about their background and be pleased that you are concerned enough to ask.
Guidelines in Your Search
Here are guidelines to assist you in selecting a qualified cosmetic surgeon:
Check into the surgical experience of the surgeon you are considering. Does
he or she specialize in the procedure(s) in which you are interested? How many
procedures of this kind has the doctor done? How many is the doctor currently
performing per year? Before-and-after photographs can give you some indication
of a surgeon's ability, although you must realize that they cannot be construed
to guarantee the result you will achieve. Make sure you are comfortable with the
personal support between you and your surgeon. In addition, you should feel at
ease with the staff. You should always feel that your concerns are being
addressed. Do not be satisfied with an incomplete answer from anyone. Asking
About Credentials
If board certification is to be used as a yardstick in determining a
surgeon's qualifications, it is important to ask your doctor about his or her
credentials and study them carefully. Initial certification by one of the member
boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), such as the American
Boards of Dermatology, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, General Surgery or Plastic
Surgery provide some assurance of formal training in the fundamentals of
cosmetic surgery.
Some board-certified physicians will then go on to become-board certified by
the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, which has established a strict set of
criteria to ensure experience and proficiency in cosmetic surgery. A physician
certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery must:
Be board-certified in an original surgical specialty recognized by the
American Board of Medical Specialties.
Have been in the practice of cosmetic surgery for the past five years.
Have performed no fewer than 1,000 cosmetic surgical procedures.
Be currently performing a minimum of 200 documented cosmetic procedures per
year.
Pass a stringent two-day oral and written examination.

Lasik: What should I expect before, during, and after surgery?
After Surgery:
Immediately after the procedure, your eye may burn, itch, or feel like there is
something in it. You may experience some discomfort, or in some cases, mild pain
and your doctor may suggest you take a mild pain reliever. Both your eyes may
tear or water. Your vision will probably be hazy or blurry.
You will instinctively want to rub your eye, but don't! Rubbing your eye could
dislodge the flap, requiring further treatment. In addition, you may experience
sensitivity to light, glare, starbursts or haloes around lights, or the whites
of your eye may look red or bloodshot. These symptoms should improve
considerably within the first few days after surgery.
You should plan on taking a few days off from work until these symptoms subside.
You should contact your doctor immediately and not wait for your scheduled
visit, if you experience severe pain, or if your vision or other symptoms get
worse instead of better.
Cosmetic
Surgery: Plastic Surgery and Total Patient Care
Botulinum toxin (Botox) is a
sterile, purified protein produced from the bacteria, Clostridium botulinum, in
the laboratory.
Botox injected in small amounts into facial muscles binds to the nerve endings
supplying the muscle and prevents nerve impulses from traveling to the muscle.
When injected into muscle, it weakens or paralyzes the muscle around the area
injected for a typical period of several months. The resultant weakening or
paralyzing effect on the facial muscle temporarily reduces or eliminates
previous skin creasing and new skin creasing is avoided.
Botox may take several days to have its effect, and the effect typically lasts
3-6 months, in most individuals, before full muscle movement returns. At that
point further treatment may be elected.

ABDOMINOPLASTY (Tummy Tuck)
Procedure: Flatten abdomen by
removing excess fat and skin and tightening muscles of abdominal wall. Length: 2
to 5 hours.
Anesthesia: General, or local with sedation. In/Outpatient: Either depending on
individual circumstances and extent of surgery.
Side Effects: Temporary pain. Swelling, soreness, numbness of abdominal skin,
bruising, tiredness for several weeks or months.
Risks: Blood clots. Infection. Bleeding under the skin flap.
Poor healing resulting in conspicuous scarring or skin loss. Need for a second
operation.
Recovery: Back to work: 2 to 4 weeks. More strenuous activity: 4 to 6 weeks or
more. Fading and flattening of scars: 3 months to 2 years.
